The Cloud Computing World Forum Africa took place this week (8 May 2012) in Sandton , Johannesburg and it had an amazing turnout and judging by the turnout it is quite clear that there is a lot of interest in cloud computing among SMEs and Enterprises in South Africa.

 
The expo was quite small and only had stands from the sponsors of the event, however, I was quite surprised that I never saw some of the big names (OpenStack, VMWare, Ubuntu, Rackspace, Amazon) that are innovating and pioneering cloud technology. Real Time Innovations (RTI), a developer of service-oriented architecture (SOA) middleware for the aerospace and defense industries, is branching out into health care with its new Connext software suite.
 
Connext provides a DataBus to link information within applications across medical devices and IT systems. The software incorporates peer-to-peer messages to connect data across enterprises without message brokers or daemon processes, according to RTI.

In what is seen as a major overhaul to the cross-platform application and user interface framework, Qt 5 Alpha has been released in advance of the full-blown iteration, which is expected later this year.

Under its Nokia parent, Qt appears to have transitioned to a state where it accommodates for (and promotes the adoption of) so-called "fluid touch based experiences" common to contemporary devices. Used extensively across the smartphone (and desktop) landscape, Qt also enjoys considerable deployment within embedded applications seen in areas such as medicine and healthcare.

Two engineers from Zitera, Alex Lucouw and Roeland van Nieuwkerk, recently entered a mobile application development evening school program that was hosted by the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE) and Nokia South Africa. All applicants were tasked to come up with an idea for the next KILLER app and were then guided through the typical development cycle of a mobile application. Nokia provided C7 phones which the applicants used to test their apps on. Using the new Nokia QtQuick framework Alex and Roeland produced two impressive apps in a short space of time.
